NY - Tribeca Festival Premieres AI-Powered Short Films Using OpenAI Technology

Get ready for a groundbreaking event at the Tribeca Festival this year! They’re featuring five innovative short films created using OpenAI’s cutting-edge Sora technology. This is a text-to-video model that brings written descriptions to life as video clips, and it’s the first time these kinds of films will be showcased at the festival.

Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, shared her excitement: “Tribeca is all about the power of storytelling to inspire change. We thrive on stories to make sense of our wonderful and broken world. Sometimes these stories come as a feature film, an immersive experience, a piece of art, or even an AI-generated short film. I can’t wait to see what this group of fiercely creative Tribeca alumni come up with.”

In a unique collaboration between the Tribeca Festival and OpenAI, a select group of filmmakers got early access to the Sora model, which isn’t available to the public yet. These filmmakers had to follow the AI usage agreements negotiated in 2023 with the Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), and Screen Actors Guild (SAG), even if their films didn’t fall under these guilds’ jurisdiction.

Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, expressed his enthusiasm: “It’s amazing to see how these filmmakers are pushing the boundaries with Sora, and we’re honored to have their works debut at the Tribeca Festival. We’re really looking forward to their short films and eager to learn how we can make Sora an even better tool for all creatives.”

Mark your calendars for June 15 when these short films will be screened, followed by a lively discussion with the filmmakers.

This exciting program follows a series of major deals between OpenAI and top media companies like Vox Media, The Atlantic, News Corp., Reddit, and People owner Dotdash Meredith.
